WALTER BURTON HARRIS
Walter Burton Harris (August 29, 1866 – April 4, 1933) was a journalist, writer, traveler, and socialite who became renowned for his writings about Morocco, where he worked for many years as a special correspondent for The Times and The Times Magazine. He moved to the country at the age of 19, eventually building himself a beautiful villa in Tangier where he spent much of his life. His language skills and physical appearance allowed him to pass as a native Moroccan, enabling him to travel in regions of the country considered off-limits to foreigners. He wrote a number of acclaimed books and articles about his travels in Morocco and other parts of the Near and Far East. Harris also played a significant—though not always constructive—role in the European diplomatic intrigues that shaped Morocco at the turn of the 20th century.
